Android 17 beta turns a Pixel's microphone into an Auracast broadcaster

Voice Broadcast, in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4, sends what the phone hears to any nearby Auracast receiver from a Quick Settings tile. Samsung shipped the same idea in One UI 8.5 in March.

Google's Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4, released at the end of August, adds a Quick Settings tile called Voice Broadcast. Tap it and the Pixel's microphone becomes an Auracast source: anyone nearby with Auracast earbuds or hearing aids can hear what the phone hears.

What it is for

A hearing-aid wearer at a dinner table hands the phone to the person across from them, or props it by the speaker at a meeting, and gets a clean feed of that voice over the room noise. Hearing-aid makers sell remote microphones for exactly this, at US$200 and up. ReSound's Multi-Mic+ is the Auracast version. A phone in a pocket is the version everybody already owns.

It also works the other way: a tour guide, a teacher or a coach broadcasts to a group without a PA.

Samsung got there first

One UI 8.5, on the Galaxy S26 since March, renamed Samsung's Auracast feature Audio broadcast and gave it two modes, media and voice. Voice mode does what Google's beta does, plus the option of a USB microphone. Google's version is Pixel-only and in beta with no stable date as of October.

The bigger pattern

The phone was always going to be the most common Auracast transmitter, because there are more phones than everything else combined. Media broadcasting from a Pixel arrived in September 2025; voice is the next step; a QR code for your own broadcast is already there. What the phone cannot do is be a receiver: it steers earbuds, it does not play. How the roles fit together.
